3H Movement Liberalism Discussions: What kind of liberalism to choose?, 3. April 2010
The speaker Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Borovali who is an academician in Istanbul Bilgi University talked about John Rawls’ political philosophy. The concept of redistribution of justice, why the concept is criticized so much by classical liberal theoreticians and how Rawls criticizes classical liberalism is explained by the speaker.
It is discussed the differences between classical liberalism and libertarian ideology discussed in the second part of the seminar. Modern liberalism is separated from classical liberalism in the point of equality of opportunity as the founding principle of individual freedom during the discussion. There were supporters of other two types of liberalism as classical liberalism and libertarianism mostly.
Classical liberals defined libertarianism as utopian, since it does not legitimize any intervention to the natural rights, and it may be useless in reality. Libertarians claimed that there are no differences between classical liberal liberalism and libertarianism, since the most ethical version of liberalism is libertarianism. The seminar and the discussion part did not aim to find a resolution to ongoing theoretical debate within liberalism; but, it contributed to the debate intellectually.
