After tremendous political and economic change in the wider region during the last three decades, the political environment in the Caucasus still remains far from being peaceful and without any guarantee of stability. The region is divided by territorial and ethnic conflicts, which keep mistrust among the countries in the region alive. In spite of the fact that twenty years have passed since the break-up of the former Soviet Union, the region’s political landscape has not changed substantially. The countries of the region continue to struggle for sovereignty, security and the removal of the repercussions of the hapless Soviet legacy. Their foreign and security policies have been based on mutual confrontation rather than on developing a future vision of partnership based on collective security for the region.
The prevailing instability in the region, the transnational energy projects and a complex interplay of South Caucasian states with the regional powers are important factors of the region’s future development. By initiating this conference, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in cooperation with its partners aims at contributing to the assessment of the present situation as well as the conditions of freedom, peace, stability and cooperation in the South Caucasus. The issues crucial for development and prosperity of the region will be discussed with experts from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, as well as from Turkey, Russia, Iran, the European Union, the USA and NATO.
The conference participation will be with special invitation.
